Gillespie, C. Richard
For many of his early years, C. Richard Gillespie lived on Maryland rivers, where he developed a lifelong love of the water and sailing. As an undergraduate in college, he became involved with the theater. His work to document the James Adams Floating Theatre became a natural extension of these two interests and resulted in the book The James Adams Floating Theatre.
Gillespie founded the theater program at Towson State University in 1961 and retired as a professor after thirty-seven years. He was named the 1991 recipient of the President's Award for Distinguished Service to the University. He has written several award-winning plays and Papa Toussaint, a docu-novel. Gillespie is an active member of the National Society for the Preservation of Tent, Folk, and Repertoire Theatre.
