Lacy, Sam

Sam Lacy (1903–2003) was a sports writing pioneer with a career spanning more than six decades. After early stints as a newspaper writer and sometimes sportscaster, he became sports editor at the Baltimore Afro-American in 1944, where he became well known for his weekly column, “A to Z.” He also did television commentary. Lacy’s 1998 induction into the writer’s wing of the National Baseball Hall of Fame is one of his many awards and tributes. With the help of Moses J. Newsome, Sam Lacy wrote his autobiography Fighting for Fairness: The Life Story of Hall of Fame Sportswriter Sam Lacy.
