Lippson, Alice Jane

Alice Jane Lippson is an internationally known scientific illustrator and estuarine scientist. A graduate of Johns Hopkins Medical Illustration School, she has spent most of her career in the fields of biology and natural history. She has authored or coauthored more than twenty scientific publications and produced scientific and natural history illustrations for more than thirty other publications. In addition, Lippson is the illustrator of Chesapeake Almanac: Following the Bay through the Seasons. Her paintings and illustrations appear in many museum exhibits along the East Coast.

As a research scientist at the Chesapeake Biological Laboratory of the University of Maryland at Solomons, Maryland, her specialty was the early developmental stages of Chesapeake Bay fishes. As research scientist at Martin Marietta Environmental Laboratories in Catonsville, Maryland, she was involved with monitoring Maryland’s Power Plant Siting Program.
She has received many awards over her career, including Best-in-Show awarded by the Society for Technical Communications, International Technical Publications category in 1975 for her Chesapeake Bay Atlas and in 1980 for her Potomac River Atlas. Martin Marietta awarded her their prestigious Jefferson Cup at Honors Night, 1975, for developing innovative methods for disseminating scientific information. She and her husband also received the Rachel Carson award for outstanding efforts in preserving the Chesapeake Bay.
