Meurn, Robert J.

Robert J. Meurn, master mariner and captain, U.S. Naval Reserve (Ret.), received his BS in nautical science from the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy and his MA in higher education from George Washington University. He taught at Texas Maritime Academy, where he was commandant of cadets and executive officer of the TS Texas Clipper. In 1983, he was honored as teacher of the year at the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy, where he served as head, Nautical Science Division. Meurn is the coauthor of Marine Cargo Operations, Third Edition, and author of Survival Guide for the Mariner, Second Edition and Watchstanding Guide for the Merchant Officer, Second Edition.

Meurn has sailed with U.S. Lines, Farrell Lines, American Export Lines, Moore McCormick Lines, Grace Lines, and Military Sealift Command. He had active duty in the U.S. Navy as a gunnery officer aboard a destroyer and executive officer aboard a Landing, Ship, Tank (LST).

A relief chief mate and master with Military Sealift Command, Atlantic, he was an active member of the U.S. Naval Reserve, where he was commanding officer of Convoy Commodore and Naval Control of Shipping Units in addition to two other commands. His last active duty was as a vice commodore during a convoy exercise in December 1989 in Diego Garcia. Meurn is a member of, and has presented papers to, the International Marine Simulation Forum (IMSF) and the International Navigation Simulator Lecturers Conference (INSLC). He is a member of the accreditation panel for the Sandy Hook Pilots Association, the examining panel for qualifications of assistant captains and captains of the Staten Island Ferries and Fireboats of the city of New York, the International Maritime Lecturers Association (IMLA), the Nautical Institute, and the Marine Board, National Research Council’s committee on ship/bridge simulation training. In 1979, he developed and instituted the first bridge watch course for cadets using the Computer Aided Operations Research Facility (CAORF) simulator at the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy. Currently, he is full professor in the department of marine transportation at the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy.
