Morgan, David

Canadian David W. Morgan developed an interest in leather braiding and whipmaking while visiting Australia in the 1960s. After returning to the United States, he set up a mail-order business encompassing his skills in both leather and metal work. This honing of his expertise led him to create the famous Indiana Jones whips.

In 1972, Cornell Maritime Press (CMP) published Morgan’s first book, Whips and Whipmaking, With a Practical Introduction to Braiding. Though the hardback version of the book went out of print in 1981, the paperback version continued to thrive with more than 36,000 copies sold. In 2004, an expanded edition was released. In 2002, CMP published his title, Braiding Fine Leather: Techniques of the Australian Whipmakers.

With more than four decades of experience, David W. Morgan continues to be a leader in the whipmaking industry. In 2007, CMP published the leathercraft expert’s third title, showcasing the growth of the whip industry in the United States, Whips of the West, An Illustrated History of American Whipmaking.
