From the editor:

August is upon us, and as the summer starts to wind down and the children start gearing up for school, we need to remember to reach out and savor that last official month of summer. August is not only the last full month of summer, but it is also officially recognized as National Catfish Month. I can think of no better way to wring out the last bit of fun from summer than enjoying a little fishing and outdoor grilling of your catch. Check out Rudow’s Guide to Fishing the Chesapeake for tips on how to find and catch the star of August, the catfish. Once you’ve reeled in dinner, Off the Hook, Rudow’s Recipes for Cooking Your Catch will tell you the tastiest ways to prepare that big guy. If you are looking for delicious sides, I recommend the classics: a side of cole slaw, some hush puppies, and for dessert, a slice of peach pie (featured below). As for me, I think I will sit back on the porch with our newest mystery, A Memory of a Murder, and personally celebrate August 15…National Relaxation Day!

Gearing Back Up for School

Leonard Calvert and the Maryland Adventure

Leonard Calvert was a quiet boy who grew up in England. When he was grown, Leonard went to Newfoundland with his father, George Calvert, the first Lord Baltimore, and fought French privateers. When his father died, Cecil became the second Lord Baltimore, and led the first colonists to settle in Maryland. Leonard was just twenty-seven-years old when he became Maryland's first governor. He faced fierce Indians, unfriendly Virginia fur traders, and plundering pirates who wanted to chase him out of Maryland and take the colony away from the Calverts.

Oyster Moon

When fourteen-year-old Anna Shepherd receives mysterious messages, she knows they are from her twin brother, Toby, who left two weeks earlier aboard an oyster dredge boat. The messages are only the beginning. A strange letter written in a foreign language arrives for her in the mail, and soon Anna realizes that someone is following her.

An exciting blend of mystery and history, Oyster Moon is set on Maryland’s Eastern Shore in the late 1800s, at the peak of the tumultuous Oyster Wars.

Chesapeake ABC

Priscilla Cummings's Chadwick the Crab series has been a staple of Chesapeake juvenile literature for more than a decade. Now Ms. Cummings turns her hand to another classic genre, the ABC book, this one with a Chesapeake regional flavor. From "A is for anchor" to "Z is for a zephyr," the sights, sounds, and feel of the Bay come through to the youngest of readers. This is a perfect way to introduce toddlers and preschoolers to the wonders of the alphabet and instill in them a love of the Chesapeake. (Also review its companion book, Chesapeake 1-2-3.) Whimsical drawings by David Aiken illustrate the verses about Chesapeake animals and things.

Chesapeake 1-2-3

In Chesapeake 1-2-3, companion book to Chesapeake ABC, the bay comes alive for preschoolers and toddlers learning to count. Pages and scenes grow more crowded as readers approach "ten," then see all the numbers once again. One girl went out to fish; two ospreys fly up high; three sails are on each boat; learn to count—the Chesapeake Way! This book will delight youngsters with its clever rhymes and whimsical drawings.
