Paulsen, Gordon W.

Gordon W. Paulsen was born in Yonkers, New York and received an MA from New York University and a law degree from Columbia University School of Law. Paulsen was one of the lawyers who represented Swedish America Line at the time of the collision between the Stockholmand Andrea Doria in 1956. With his son, Bruce G. Paulsen, Gordon W. Paulsen coedited Out of the Fog: The Sinking of Andrea Doria.

Though now retired, he served as president of the Maritime Law Association of the United States from 1982 to 1984 and represented the association at an international conference that developed the International Maritime Rules of the Road. In 1990 Paulsen was part of a delegation of leading maritime lawyers and law professors sent to the People’s Republic of China for the formation of a Chinese maritime code.

Paulsen has been awarded several commendations from the United States Coast Guard and been appointed as Knight, First Class in the Norwegian Royal Order of Merit. Paulsen is a member of the Maritime Law Association of the United States, the American College of Trial Lawyers, and the American Guild of Organists.
