Rowen, Alan L.

Professor Alan L. Rowen graduated from the State University of New York (SUNY) Maritime College at Fort Schuyler in 1965. Until 1968, he sailed on merchant ships, progressively raising his license to first assistant engineer. From then through 1971, he was at SUNY Maritime as an engineering watch officer and instructor and earned an MS in mechanical and ocean engineering from Stevens Institute of Technology. In 1971, he joined the Naess Shipping Group in New York as a marine engineer/naval architect, working with a fleet of tankers, product carriers, bulk carriers, and OBOs, and in other new-construction projects in Europe, Japan, and the U.S., including gas carriers and self-unloading bulk carriers. In 1975, he moved to London as manager of new construction.

Rowen returned to New York in 1977 to teach at the Webb Institute. While there, he worked on numerous tasks as a research associate and independent consultant or contractor. He was the first Rosenblatt Professor of Marine Engineering. He retired from the Webb Institute of Naval Architecture in 2001 and assumed the position of technical director of the Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers (SNAME). Rowen is a life fellow of SNAME, chaired the Ships’ Machinery Committee, and is involved in the society's technical program. He also is a fellow of the Institute of Marine Engineers and an officer of the institute’s Eastern USA Branch. Rowen contributed to a number of publications that are widely used in the industry and by students at the Webb Institute and at other schools. In addition, he is one of the associate editors of the book Modern Marine Engineer’s Manual, Vol. II, Third Edition. He lives in New York City with his wife Alice, and has two sons, Aaron and Jonah.
