Charles L. Sauerbier is a graduate of California Maritime Academy and Columbia University with a BS degree in mathematics. He obtained his unlimited master’s license in 1941 and was on active duty in the U.S. Navy from January 1942 until October 1946. Sauerbier served as chief of the department of natural science at the Cadet School in San Mateo until that school was terminated. He transferred to the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy as chief of the cargo section. From 1959 until 1965 he was chief of a group sent to Indonesia by the U.S. Agency for International Development to establish a National Indonesian Merchant Marine Academy, and until 1968 served as Chief of Ports and Waterways of the USAID Mission in Saigon. Sauerbier is the author of Marine Cargo Operations, Third Edition.
