Merle B. Turner received a BS from Williamette University, an MA degree from Stanford, and a PhD from the University of Colorado. A former instructor at the University of Colorado and professor of psychology at San Diego State University, he is now retired. He trained as an experimental psychologist, but turned to the philosophy of science after securing a Ford Fellowship to study at Cambridge University in England.

He was trained in navigation in the United States Air Force and has cruised extensively, with landfalls in Tahiti, Fiji, the Bahamas, Jamaica, and Mexico. Turner has held membership in the American Association for the Advancement of Science, Sigma Xi, the American Psychological Association, and the Western Psychological Association.

Turner is the author of the book Celestial for the Cruising Navigator.
